A New Understanding of Aspergers and Autism

Although figures have long-shown significantly higher autism traits in boys and men than in girls and women, new studies are helping us understand how autism and aspergers manifest differently amongst genders. ‘Autistic masking’ is a term used to describe people who manage to ‘mask’ their autistic behavior traits in order to better assimilate into social situations and society at large. This coping mechanism is especially prevalent in girls and women and means that thousands of people go through their lives without diagnosis, and often without understanding their own behaviors. In this episode, we spoke with Brenda Dater from The Asperger/Autism Network (AANE) about their support systems for people within the autism community, as well as guidance for their parents, families and peers. 

‘Meeting people where they are and helping them get to where they want to go’

The steady rise of autism and aspergers since 2000 has sparked much interest from researchers and clinicians. It seems clear, though; it is not the rates which are increasing, but the improved accuracy of the observations used for diagnoses. Every individual on the autistic spectrum is unique and will manifest behaviors in authentic ways. Dater explains AANE’s ‘strength-based’ approach, which aims to help each individual to better understand themselves and to find their place within a supportive community. Just like the research into autism and aspergers is still developing, AANE’s programs are designed to continue learning and responding to the autism communities’ specific needs.
