A staggering 77 billion animals are slaughtered for food every year. In this episode we talked with Mimi Bekhechi, Vice President of International Programmes at PETA UK, about the importance of treating animals with the same respect we afford humans, and not viewing them as a product.
The Problem of Internalized Speciesism
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation aims to stop animal suffering. The organization’s core message is that animals are not ours to exploit; we should not experiment on them, eat them, wear them or use them for entertainment. PETA is known for its prominent campaigning, lobbying and Cruelty Investigations.
Mimi explains that animal cruelty arises from speciesism: the dangerous idea that animals are inferior to us. In reality, we are far more similar to animals than we are different. Animals have emotions, communities and families just like we do.
Knowing about the meat industry and the devastating effects of animal cruelty is now more important than ever. The global coronavirus pandemic was a direct result of animal exploitation which we must learn from to avoid the spread of new viruses in the future.
