Huge swathes of the population were left destitute following the country’s brutal civil war, and education is one of the provisions that was hit hardest. In this episode we talked with Nancy Press from Child Aid about the importance of equipping poor Guatemalan children with the skills they need for upwards social mobility.
Child Aid: Reading For A Better Future
Child Aid has drastically improved the quality of education in rural Guatemala. They started by delivering books to Guatemalan schools - almost 700,000 so far. Nancy explains that a good foundational education is the key determining factor in a child’s future success. That’s why Child Aid focuses on reading. They offer programs designed to train Guatemalan teachers to read to their children and inspire them to pick up books for themselves.
There is a huge wealth disparity in Guatemala, which leaves poorer communities isolated and with limited knowledge of the world around them. That’s why reading is so important; it is a window into a different world that enriches students and gives them a taste of a brighter future.
