When it comes to mental health, it’s extremely important that the treatment is better than the cure. Some drugs and practices are extremely outdated and can be downright cruel, causing further damage to the psyche of developing children with disorders, or with mental health patients that are already struggling to keep a firm on hold life. In this episode, we talked with Reverend Frederick Shaw from Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) about ending drug treatments that cause more harm than help, and ultimately advocating against outdated mental health practices that only cause pain.
Pain & Suffering Is Not The Cure
Some practices, such as the use of psychiatric drugs focus on mental control to make patients more manageable, but can cause lasting damage; worse still, it is not just adults that are subjected to this practice; some children to this day experience these stopgap solutions. Reverend Shaw explains that these drugs and treatments that only “take the spark” in patients should be stopped, and that profit from pharmaceutical sales for these harsh medications should not dictate how we treat mental health illnesses.
