Since 1984, the Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has been a driving force in the development of healthcare, agriculture, and water and sanitation systems in underserved communities across Africa. With its team of skilled professionals, CPAR has impacted millions of lives over the past few decades.
Today we talk with Keely Noiles, Manager of Philanthropy and Programs of CPAR, about their initiatives and how they work toward a common goal of transforming communities.
A Legacy of Transforming Communities in Africa
CPAR is a registered Canadian charity organization that spearheads the transformation of communities in Africa using a holistic approach. The organization comprises a team of diverse professionals such as nurses, doctors, agriculturalists, and engineers, all of whom bring their unique skills to enhance the quality of life of underserved communities.
Its first key area is healthcare, and they have been actively involved in improving the healthcare system in Africa since its inception. They train healthcare workers on emergency obstetrics, HIV prevention, and nutrition, to name a few. They also establish women's health centers, emphasizing maternal and child health. A second focus of the organization is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. CPAR ensures that communities have access to safe water and sanitation facilities. They drill boreholes and put up shallow wells, install hand pumps, and promote sanitation and hygiene practices through community-led approaches.
Another important point for CPAR is food security, which is a fundamental factor in breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring long-term sustainability. By providing farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to improve their crop yields and irrigation systems, CPAR can help increase food production and security for communities in Africa. Additionally, CPAR’s efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices have helped farmers produce healthier crops, which has resulted in better nutrition for families.
CPAR believes in community-led development. They work with the community members to identify their needs and find solutions that are sustainable in the long run. They engage in capacity building of the community, providing the necessary skills and tools to independently manage the projects they implement.
