The USA alone is home to almost 3 thousand different animal species and 18 thousand plant species. Their conservation and protection in a rapidly changing world is no easy task. In this episode we talked with Jason Rylander from Defenders of Wildlife about the importance of preventing habitat loss.

Conservation Starts with Legislation

Defenders of Wildlife works with lawmakers to protect the USA’s rich and varied flora and fauna, from wolves and whales to bears and bison. Using the Endangered Species Act, the organization ensures at risk species are protected from hunting, capture and trading. Additionally, animals on the list can receive designated “critical habitat” and a recovery plan to help bring them back from the brink.

Jason explains how the Endangered Species Act can help protect habitat areas that species need to ensure their survival. This is especially important in the context of climate change; as the USA faces more weather extremes, wildlife is increasingly migrating to new homes. Animals at risk of habitat loss need protected areas to thrive. Luckily, the current government is on board with the 30 by 30 campaign, which aims to protect 30 percent of the USA’s lands and waters by 2030.
