A deep conversation with a stranger is proven to confer a whole host of mental and physical benefits. But not everyone has a chance to meet new people. In this episode we talked with Judith Turner from DOROT about the importance of talking with some of society’s most isolated older adults.

It’s Never Too Late to Make New Friends

The elderly are the group most likely to suffer from chronic loneliness. As friends and partners pass away, many older adults struggle to connect with their community. And studies show that social isolation can have the equivalent health impact of 17 cigarettes a day.

DOROT offers a range of programs designed to uplift older adults. These include birthday visits, cemetery visits and friendly visits. 

Sophie, a DOROT volunteer in her final year of high school, was paired with Victoria. She has been visiting her for 4 years and has gained a lot from the experience. She describes how she has learned many reassuring lessons through Victoria’s wisdom and experience. Victoria is always happy to discuss Sophie’s problems with her and will miss her when she goes to college.
