Between 1990 & 2005, a new prison was built every 10 days in the US. This need for many penitentiary facilities is symptomatic of how many people are incarcerated in the US, and how harsh and how long we keep the accused away from their families. Harsher still, people of color are also treated more poorly in the context of the law, being treated to unjust biases and unfair sentences. Kevin Ring argues that we need to look closer at law with more discretion and context; harsh sentences do not make us safer and they need to match the crimes committed for a more effective justice system.
