Many people have never heard of PKD, even though it affects between 1 in 400 and 1 in 1000 people worldwide. In this episode we talked with Dr. Chris Rusconi from the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation about pushing forward the development of treatments for PKD.
What Is PKD?
PKD is an inherited disorder that causes cysts - sacs full of liquid - to form on the kidney. It’s a painful chronic condition that makes the kidneys swell dramatically over time and eventually fail. Many PKD patients need dialysis or a kidney transplant by the age of 50.
Chris explains that it has huge implications not only for the sufferer, but also for their future family. One form of the condition, known as Autosomal Dominant (APKD), has a 50% chance of being passed on to a child. That’s why education and awareness is so important; if an individual is affected, it’s likely that their relatives will be too.
The PKD Foundation fights the disorder by working with industry researchers and regulators to expedite therapies. It is part of the PKD Outcomes Consortium, which focuses on developing tools and promotes research that will lead to the development of new treatments for PKD, and also maintains the ADPKD Registry with data on individual outcomes. This helps both improve patient care and advance treatment research.
