Agriculture is Haiti’s lifeblood. The sector accounts for over 20 percent of the country’s economic output. Yet the rural people of Haiti often lack the skills and equipment needed to make best use of the land and to strengthen their community. In this episode we talked with Katiana Anglade from the Lambi Fund about the importance of collaborating with rural Haitians, giving them a voice, understanding their needs and promoting the democratic movement in Haiti.
Local Solutions To Local Problems
The Lambi Fund works with fledgling grassroots organizations, taking its lead from locals on the ground. Many Haitians are running agricultural projects that require tools, raw materials and expertise to make them sustainable. The Lambi Fund provides education, training, management skills and funds to help strengthen civil society.
Katiana explains that this model has been proven to work sustainably, empowering rural communities and motivating future generations to discover the potential of agriculture. Where most charity-led agriculture initiatives fail, over four fifths of the Lambi Fund’s sponsored projects survive to this day.
The coronavirus pandemic has presented new challenges. It has tested already stretched communication lines, further isolating rural communities, and disrupted supply chains. Luckily, the Lambi Fund works with its own regional monitors - locals on the ground who report on the health of projects and offer as much support as possible.
