Two million children worldwide suffer from clubfoot. While clubfoot is an easily treated disability in developed countries, four out of five children cannot access treatment in underdeveloped countries. In today's episode, we talked with Amanda Springer from MiracleFeet.
MiracleFeet is a nonprofit organization that is on a journey to make walking accessible for everyone. They operate in developing countries and work with local healthcare providers, workers, and organizations to bring low-cost solutions to children in need. Amanda says that their work has impacted more than 9,500 children this year.
Offering A Low-Cost Treatment
The nonprofit organization has already changed the lives of more than 57,000 children across 29 countries. Their model proves to work and be effective in treating children born with clubfoot. By providing the proper treatment to children in need, Miracle Feet changes lives. They do most of their work in middle-income countries where there either isn't a solution or the solution is too expensive. Clubfoot treatment is historically affordable in developed countries. Amanda says that a low-cost solution doesn't exist in the developing world.
Therefore they're targeting these countries to ensure they have a sustainable national program with high-quality treatment for clubfoot in place. They hope to treat 1.4 million children in the next 14 years.
