In Clark County, Nevada, which is the home of Las Vegas, domestic violence is the leading cause of death amongst women. In this episode we talked with Liz Ortenburger from Safenest about the importance of working with every party involved in domestic violence.

Safenest Las Vegas Takes A Holistic Approach To Domestic Violence

Safenest is a nonprofit that works with those who perpetrate violence, victims of the violence and kids affected by the violence, offering a range of services and confidential assistance. Additionally, they run a large prevention program with young people that teaches them about anger, respect and responsibility.  Liz explains that often violence is repeated if children are witnessing it.  That is why prevention programs are an important step to address domestic violence issues, breaking the cycle of generational violence.

Helping Children Through A Domestic Crisis

For children who have experienced violence at home, Safenest offers therapy and shelter programs. Additionally, Safenest was instrumental in passing legislation three years ago that improved communication between police responding to domestic abuse callouts and the schools of children affected by the violence. Now, schools are required to offer mental health support to children living in violent households.
