Homelessness is perhaps one of the worst experiences that anyone can go through -- nowhere to go, no money to spend and no one to turn to. In an ideal world, nobody should ever have to go through that suffering. With very little to their name and no support system to lean on, homelessness becomes a vicious cycle for many. In this episode, we talk with Marcia Dash from Sierra House, an organization that helps young women by training them on how they can be self-sufficient and start rebuilding their lives.
Self-Sufficiency Is Not So Easily Achieved
The circumstances that contribute to homelessness are varied and traumatic. Some of the young women who find themselves homeless homeless have aged out of the foster care system and have nowhere else to go. Others have chosen homelessness over other mentally or physically abusive situations. Factor in the trauma of living on the streets, and these women are left feeling hopeless and robbed of an opportunity at a normal life. To uplift these women, Marcia Dash explains that assistance in the form of career and skills training along with mental health counselling are extremely important.
