As an unfortunate reality of the implications of ocean pollution, those who spend the most amount of time in and around the sea are those who are faced most acutely with the realities of trash’s misplacement in the sea. Social media campaigns bring essential awareness to the destructive nature of pollution in our oceans, the essence of which is in the storytelling. In this episode we spoke with Jack Fishman, community conservation officer from Project AWARE about their flagship Dive Against Debris® program and the importance of community in ocean conservation.
‘The message that I'd like to share is more one of hope’
Measuring trash being pulled out of the sea by divers in units, versus a measure of weight, contributes to the weaving of stories and community-centric battle against debris. From that point forward, individuals can take excavated trash and repurpose it sustainably, to not only positively impact the oceans at risk, but to foster communities of intuitive thinkers and passionate conservationists. Jack Fishman explains that while visiting different countries and continents to speak with ocean conservationists, no matter the language or cultural barriers, knowing that trash doesn’t belong in the sea defies linguistics.
