To keep the peace and maintain social cohesion in turbulent times, future leaders must know their history. By learning what motivated the movers and shakers of our past, they can make informed and well-rounded decisions in the present. In this episode we talked with Dr. Cathy Gorn from National History Day about improving the teaching and learning of history in middle and high schools in the USA.
Letting the Creative Juices Flow
National History Day is modernizing the way kids are taught history. Their approach rejects dull memorized lists of key events and dates. Instead, students are encouraged to take ownership of a research project on a topic that interests them, guided by an annual theme; the 2021 National History Day theme is Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.
Project work has numerous benefits. Cathy explains that it helps children develop the vital skills they need to participate in and improve society: critical thinking, research, empathy and communication. The level of creativity involved makes the work much more engaging, too. Students who enter the regional and national project competition might present their findings as a website, documentary or even a dramatic performance.
