Cancer is a life-changing diagnosis that requires information, resources, and support. Young adults diagnosed with cancer are presented with unique challenges that affect their lives in many ways. To counter these circumstances, Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) provides resources, support, and community to help young adults affected by cancer to make sense of their diagnosis, navigate the healthcare system, and live their best lives. In this episode we talk with Geoff Eaton, Director and Founder of YACC to explore the services and programs offered by YACC, the impact they have had on young adults affected by cancer, and how you can support their work.
A Comprehensive Resource for Fighting Cancer
YACC was founded in 2000 by a group of young adults who had experienced cancer themselves. They recognized that young adults face unique difficulties when dealing with cancer, including being the only young person in a hospital ward filled with children or older adults, as well as the impact it has on their career, social life, and mental health.
To address these challenges, YACC offers a variety of programs and resources, including retreats, webinars, and a private Facebook community. Their retreats provide a safe environment for young adults with cancer to connect with each other, share their experiences, and learn from experts in fields like mental health and nutrition. The webinars cover topics such as dealing with fear and anxiety, handling relationships during cancer, and managing work and finances. The private Facebook community provides a platform for members to share their stories, ask for advice, and connect with each other on a more personal level.
YACC also runs a program called SurvivorLink, which matches newly diagnosed young adults with volunteers who have already gone through a similar experience. This program provides a valuable source of mentorship and support for those who are going through a difficult time and can benefit from talking to someone who has been there before.
