The HIV-AIDS epidemic is still ongoing in the US. Every year, 1 million new individuals are diagnosed with the disease, and 38 million people live with HIV-AIDS. In this episode, we talked with John Huckaby from AIDS Foundation Houston about providing care for individuals that are at risk or have been diagnosed with HIV-AIDS, and ending the epidemic one person at a time.
AIDS Foundation Houston: A Stigma-Free Fight Against HIV-AIDS
While we have come a long way with treating HIV-AIDS and that we have plenty of preventive and treatment methods, not everyone has access to these resources. Some who suffer from it bear the stigma of having this disease and are too ashamed to find help; others are underprivileged and cannot afford to undergo treatment. John Huckaby explains we need to normalize the conversation about HIV-AIDS, and that there are already plenty of ways to fight the illness with treatments that were not available years ago. Along with the AIDS Foundation Houston they seek to dispel the stigma and provide a safe space for HIV-AIDS victims to receive treatment and continue with their lives.
