Many people who visit Greece for its cultural heritage and its famous beaches are unaware that the country is home to a growing population of bears and wolves. In this episode we talked with Panos Stefanou from Arcturos about the work his organization is doing to protect these animals from man-made threats.
Keeping Their Wild Instincts
Luckily, bears and wolves in Greece are now safer than ever. Arcturos has been looking after bears for almost 30 years, in which time laws protecting wild animals have been dramatically tightened. But bear and wolf populations still face a range of vicious and often illegal dangers, including poisoning, shooting and trapping.
Panos explains that coexisting with a growing population of bears presents us with evolving challenges. One of these is that bears gradually become too comfortable around humans, visiting settlements in search of food. This can put both local communities and the animals in danger. Arcturos is creating action plans that local authorities can implement to manage bear and wolf populations sustainably. The key is respecting their space and natural habitats.
