The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated digital and social divides that have long been the reality for  students and teachers across the U.S. With millions of students learning online, and many districts facing calls for more inclusive and responsive content and instructional materials, questions of culturally responsive education and the tools to achieve it are more pertinent than ever. In this episode we talked with Sabia Prescott from New America about how digital technology might be leveraged for culturally responsive teaching.

What Is Culturally Responsive Teaching?

Culturally responsive education is an approach to schooling that promotes student engagement, learning, and achievement by centering their knowledge, cultural backgrounds, and everyday experiences in the classroom. Sabia and her colleagues at New America conduct research on the content taught in schools,  the barriers to teaching representatives, inclusive content, and the policy levers for scaling this type of curricula. She explains that New America’s Education Policy Program acts as a bridge between teachers, school districts, and policymakers, hoping to articulate the everyday concerns of educators who want to see changes to the education system in the United States and better communicate often dense policy language into understandable, actionable recommendations.

Her team at New America also works to ensure policymakers are considering digital equity when crafting new policy proposals to help students during the pandemic. The disparity between the students with reliable home internet access and the millions without, often referred to as the digital divide, has come front and center during the pandemic.
