Only five species of rhinos exist – two in Africa, two in Indonesia, and one in India. Only 30,000 rhinos are spread across all five species. The number isn’t significant enough to fill a football stadium to put that into context. We are very close to making sure the rhino population goes down even more. Unless we act, the rhino population will decrease to worrying levels.

Over the years, the rhino populations have drastically decreased. Reasons for that are rhino poaching, loss of natural habitat, and other human-related impacts. The rhino poaching crisis is especially concerning to experts that want to see the wild populations of the five rhino species increase. In this episode, we talked with Nina Fascione, Executive Director at International Rhino Foundation.
They are a nonprofit organization that fights for the survival of the rhino population. Their rhino foundation makes sure the Sumatran rhino, Indian rhino, Javan rhinos, and other species can thrive in the wild.
Making Sure Future Generations Survive
International Rhino Foundation partners with local communities worldwide to ensure the survival of the rhino population. Through rhino conservation efforts, the organization looks to increase the population of each species.
The organization's partners in Indonesia, Africa, and India perform on-ground actions to support rhino conservation. For example, the Sumatran rhino sanctuary is home to eight Sumatran rhinos. A calf was born to a first-time rhino mother called Rosa in recent months. The Sumatran rhino sanctuary is imperative to the organization, as only 80 Sumatran rhinos are left in the world.
