The coronavirus pandemic has made American society less equal and less fair. Poorer communities were hit hardest as the virus ravaged industries like hospitality and catering and customers dried up. In this episode, we talked with Barrie Hathaway from Jobtrain about the importance of helping people who come from a very low-income background get started in careers that lead to good wages.
Tipping The Scales To Create A Fairer Job Market
In communities that are very low income, there's a real lack of opportunity. The odds of breaking into the best jobs in locations like the Bay Area are heavily stacked against people from poorer backgrounds, despite the vital skills and knowledge they have to offer. Jobrains aims to train job seekers and redress the balance, helping potential and talent from poorer communities to be realized.
45 percent of the people Jobtrain works with had lost their jobs at the height of the pandemic and 60 percent of them had seen someone in their family lose a job. Barrie explains that Jobtrain doesn’t just find jobs and help with the job search - it offers a far more holistic workforce development program. For those who aren’t yet in a position to thrive, Jobtrain helps with fundamentals such as food security, housing security and legal issues. When home life is secure, finding a job is much easier.
