Almost 14,000 US Citizens Have Died Of Kidney Cancers This Year
Over the last 30 years, the Kidney Cancer Association has given out over $60 million in research funds. They host conferences, create educational materials, and support patients through their cancer journey. They also promote scientific advances through two annual research symposia.
The risk factors associated with developing kidney cancer are similar to those of many other cancers. People most at risk struggle to maintain a healthy weight, smoke, are unfit, and have a poor diet. Contrary to popular belief, it's often has nothing to do with a family history of cancer.
Different Kinds Of Cancer Cells
When people ask about cancer research, what they don’t necessarily understand, according to Sallie, is that cancer is not one entity. Kidney cancer cells may operate differently to breast cancer cells and respond differently to treatment and in clinical trials. The idea of ‘one cure’ is misleading. Even within the kidney or renal cell cancer, there are various types of kidney tumors that have different characteristics and need alternative treatments, such as immunotherapy.
One of KCA’s research grants specifically targets psychosocial issues in dealing with cancer, focusing on supporting patients and making their treatment go smoothly.
