The towering metropolis of Manhattan is testament to the power of the age-old American dream. The USA’s financial and cultural hub was built by ambitious and enterprising immigrants who came from all over the world. In this episode we talked with Murad Awawdeh from NYIC about protecting the rights of New York State’s immigrants in the face of numerous barriers.
What Difficulties Do Immigrants Face?
The New York Immigration Coalition wants all New Yorkers to be able to thrive. They represent over 200 different immigrant groups from all over the state, uniting them and advocating for their rights.
Murad explains that there are a number of long-standing issues NYIC aims to tackle. Many problems were actually made worse by the inflammatory rhetoric the last presidential administration peddled. Immigrants in New York often lack access to services and support in their native language. Additionally, many lack access to proper legal representation. That’s why NYIC makes sure qualified immigration attorneys and the organizations who provide legal services to immigrants are fully funded.
Another huge issue is health care. Immigrants often find themselves excluded from health insurance, which is especially troubling during a global pandemic!
