#215 Great.com Talks With... EdChoice

In the U.S., the decision of where you will attend school is based on where you live. So different neighborhoods have starkly different opportunities available for children and families. Unfortunately, this usually means that the people who live in wealthy areas also have the choice of the best schools; because wealth and proper education inevitably come hand-in-hand. In this episode, we spoke with Robert Enlow from EdChoice about their mission to create an equitable education system in America, in which parents are able to make informed decisions for the future of their children. 

Empowering Parents Across the Country by Putting the Freedom of Choice into Their Hands

To be clear, it is not that EdChoice are pro-private schools, they are simply pro-choice. As Robert explains, it is about creating equity between the systems and within the choices so that parents and carers can make choices based on the wants and needs of their children. Furthermore, the schooling system will be forced to change for the better with the added pressure of choice: they will be ignited to improve their services, keep up with competition and offer quality education if they want to enroll students. 

“We've created in this country a system whereby if you can afford a house, you can get a better education...and this is how the generational cycle continues, where wealthy kids gain better educations and the class system remains mostly static.”

EdChoice advocates for educational funds from the state to be put into the hands of the parents, allowing them to decide where they direct it when the time arises. With the freedom of educational choice, there is a strong impetus for the schooling system to evolve and improve in order to respond to the needs of the children which should benefit from. Thus, the parents and children benefit, as well as the system as a whole and therefore the younger generations will move into society more fulfilled and better educated.
