The issue of hunger in the US has grown worse since the pandemic, with 48-50 million food insecure people unsure of where their next meal will come from. The question has to arise: how is one in every six people going hungry whilst almost 100 billion pounds of food is being wasted every year? In this episode, we spoke with Gary Oppenheimer from AmpleHarvest.org about their mission to end food waste and hunger by educating gardeners on how to donate their surplus harvest to local food pantries.
Working to Reach All Those with Dirt Under Their Nails
There are currently 33,500+ food pantries across the US. These are the places where food insecure people and families visit to collect their donated food. AmpleHarvest.org works to build bridges between the food pantries and local gardeners, firstly to inform them that they are able to donate their fresh produce, and secondly to ensure that no food is being wasted. Oppenheimer explains that the average gardener grows 270 pounds surplus food per year, which amounts to a total of 11.4 billion pounds surplus collectively. If all gardeners donated their surplus harvests to food pantries it would be enough to feed 28 million people annually.
