Malaria impacts different age groups differently. It can be particularly harmful and devastating for children aged five and under. That's because young children don't have a developed immune system as adults. But that doesn't mean adults don't suffer from malaria. That's why in today's episode, we talked with Rob Mather, founder and CEO of Against Malaria Foundation.
Against Malaria Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to fund anti-malaria nets. These nets go over beds and protect people when sleeping. This is important because mosquitos come out at night and a sleeping person is a perfect target.
$2 Bed Nets to End Malaria Bites
The organization uses public donations to fund bed nets. The bed nets funded go to the most impacted regions of the world. In most cases, these are countries in Africa where malaria is a particular problem.
The cost of a net is $2, and it protects 2 people. For every 600 nets Against Malaria Foundation distributes to affected communities, one child doesn’t die and 500-1000 cases of malaria are prevented.
Despite most of the Western world not being familiar with the impact of malaria, African countries are all too familiar. Each year 650,000 people die and 240+ million people fall is from malaria. Malaria is life-threatening for young children, 70% of malaria deaths are among children under 5, pregnant women, and even healthy adults. Therefore, the need for some sort of malaria control is necessary to alleviate the global malaria burden.
