Black Sash South Africa has stood as a vanguard for social and economic justice since its inception in 1955. Initially formed as a women's volunteer organization to protest against the pass laws of apartheid, it has evolved into a critical advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable communities within South Africa. Today, Black Sash's mission focuses on working towards the realization of socio-economic rights, as enshrined in the South African Constitution, with a particular emphasis on social security and social protection for those living in poverty and unemployment.

Today we talked with Rachel Bukasa, National Director of Black Sash about their steadfast commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and accountability.
Unveiling Justice: Black Sash's Enduring Commitment to Human Rights

Black Sash employs a variety of strategies to monitor societal issues, engage in meaningful advocacy, and educate the public on their rights. This includes Community-Based Monitoring (CBM), which has been a pivotal part of their operation for the past 19 years. Through CBM, Black Sash empowers communities and citizens as active holders of fundamental rights, providing feedback to government departments to improve service delivery. Their model fosters collaboration between civil society and civil servants, aiming to build a capable state.

The organization runs a national paralegal Helpline, offering free legal services via telephone, SMS, and social media platforms. This initiative ensures that members of the public have access to critical legal advice, furthering Black Sash's commitment to access to justice.

One of Black Sash's significant advocacy efforts has been pushing for basic income support for individuals aged 18-59 with little to no income. This campaign has engaged various stakeholders, including religious groups, human rights commissions, labor councils, and trade unions, demonstrating Black Sash’s capacity to unite different sectors towards a common goal. The organization has also coordinated meetings with Civil Society Stakeholders to support the extension of the COVID Social Relief of Distress Grant, highlighting their responsiveness to immediate and emergent needs within the community.

Education and training are at the heart of Black Sash's strategy to bolster human rights and social protection mechanisms. The Dullah Omar School, a significant initiative, aims to formalize and standardize the paralegal sector at community-based advice offices, enhancing the capabilities of legal practitioners across South Africa. Additionally, through Khulumas or discussion forums, Black Sash stimulates discourse on topics like inequality, poverty, and the roles of government and business in human rights, fostering an active citizenry capable of holding government accountable.
