But did you know that cheetahs are one of the most endangered animals on the planet? As of today, there are only 7100 cheetahs left in the wild remaining in the world. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Laurie Marker from Cheetah Conservation Fund about saving cheetahs and keeping them living in the wild.
The Fastest Land Animal: The Big Cats Are Vulnerable And Need Our Help
There are plenty of reasons why cheetah populations are currently vulnerable; numbering only in the thousands now, they are victims of habitat displacement, poaching and the illegal exotic animal trade. Since they are meant to be living out in the wild, they make for easy prey for those wishing to profit off their exotic and iconic nature. Factor in the lack of genetic diversity for these animals leading to reproductive problems and diseases, and we see a sharp decline in the population over the last 50 years. Dr. Marker explains that in order to save the cheetahs and help keep them in the wild, we should act now and do our part to stamp out cheetah hunting, help local communities with cheetah populations and teach them how to coexist with these big cats, and research ways to help save the species.
