Being an immigrant can bring a whole host of disorienting challenges: prejudice, a language barrier, legal difficulties and cultural pressures. Many women and girls of Latin American origin find it especially difficult to stand up and be counted. In this episode we talked with Bridget Cooke from Adelante Mujeres about the importance of empowering Latinas by equipping them with the tools to become leaders in their community.
A Ticket to a Better Life?
About half as many Latinas own homes as the white population at large in the USA. Adelante Mujeres tackles this inequality with a wide variety of programs that revolve around the principles of education, entrepreneurship and empowerment.
Bridget explains that education is the main predictor of a better life for yourself, your family and for all those you influence. Adelante Mujeres’ programs are designed to keep young latinas in formal education for as long as possible in order to help lift their families out of poverty. Creating a business is another great way to engage with your community. Many immigrants have a real drive which can be effectively channeled through the dedicated entrepreneurship coaching Adelante Mujeres offers.
