Obstetric fistulas are severe medical conditions resulting from prolonged and difficult childbirths. There are two main types which can occur during pregnancy if professional healthcare is not available, and both conditions can lead to devastating life-long problems. In this episode, we spoke with Debra Matityahu from Beyond Fistula about their holistic programs which aid the physical and social healing of obstetric fistula survivors in Kenya.
Helping the Women Not Only To Survive, but Also Thrive
Fistulas affect girls and women in developing regions of the world (predominantly Africa and South Asia), where access to healthcare and professional childbirth resources is limited or unavailable. Alongside the severe physical effects associated with fistula, many women are also exiled from their communities due to misinformation and social stigma surrounding the condition. Debra Matityahu explains how important their psycho-social programs are for survivors to reintegrate and rebuild their lives after surgery. Beyond Fistula’s scholarship program helps young survivors return to school by providing financial, emotional and social support. On top of this, they offer vocational and business training to allow the women they work with to foster the skills and independence they need to thrive.
