With working parents and differing socio-economic contexts, individual attention towards adolescent development is far from standardized. Many public and charter schools have limited resources to accompany school districts’ curriculum and not enough time during the school day to focus on extra-curricular, enriching activities. After school programs allow for students to foster supplemental notions of community alongside their classmates and tutors - to receive specialized lessons and assistance during time otherwise lost. Tori Schwarzlose and Karen Medina explain that middle school can be a traumatic time of life for many adolescents and added sensory attention can be a crucial reprieve.
