We all approach learning in a unique way. Understanding learning disabilities is about fostering an environment in which every student is cherished and encouraged to reach their potential, no matter how they learn. In this episode we talked with Joey Hunziker from the National Center For Learning Disabilities about making the system more accommodating.

A Disability Should Not Hinder Achievement

NCLD safeguards and expands the rights of students in American schools who have learning disabilities or attention issues. The organization has been advocating for students and raising awareness about learning disabilities for 44 years.  

Joe explains that NCLD fights for a system that will empower students by recognizing their strengths and skills and nurturing them properly. The organization’s Young Adult Leadership Council exists to help students feel comfortable and supported throughout their educational journey.

In this interview, we hear from three young adults with learning disabilities, who describe the problems they experienced growing up.

Abner explains that awareness is crucial. He describes how his parents were ill equipped to support his educational needs and didn’t really understand them. 

For Joseph, the biggest issues are a discrepancy between what students need and what is provided, as well as a lack of guidance and support from a young age. 

Madison stresses the importance of time; students with learning disabilities are still capable of learning like everyone else, but this might just take a little longer. It’s up to educators to be more cooperative.
