Low adult literacy is a major stumbling block for families throughout the USA. Not only can it limit a parent’s employment prospects, but it can also provide challenges to foster their child's academic growth. In this episode we talked with Dr. Josh Cramer from the National Center for Families Learning about bringing parents and children together to learn from each other.

Learning Together Drives Better Results

NCFL aims to eradicate poverty through learning. For low income families, maternal education level is the number one indicator of a child’s success. A mother who is engaged in her own education as well as her child’s is much more likely to see her family prosper. That’s why NCFL offers a holistic Family Literacy Program, that complements traditional school coursework. This involves teaching parents literacy skills and ways to be academically supportive. 

Family Literacy also promotes parent and child together time (PACT®). Josh explains that this aspect is especially important. PACT encourages parents and children to learn as a unit and share their academic findings with each other. A growing body of evidence shows that PACT is mutually encouraging and helps develop a sense of community and empathy.
