This news brings sadness to families and creates significant stress in their lives. Kids Cancer Care is a nonprofit organization in Alberta that helps families cope with childhood cancer. For over 30 years, Kids Cancer Care provides emotional and practical support for families with children diagnosed with cancer. In this article, we talk with Christine McIver, who is the Founder and CEO at Kids Cancer Care to explore their work and how they support children with cancer in Alberta.
A Beacon of Hope for Children Battling Cancer
Kids Cancer Care is a charitable organization that aims to provide support to children diagnosed with cancer and their families across Alberta. The organization runs several programs, such as Camp Kindle, a summer camp for children with cancer. The camp is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Water Valley, Alberta. Camp Kindle offers children with cancer an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, helps them gain independence, and to form friendships with other children who have experienced similar challenges. Camp Kindle is just one of the several programs that Kids Cancer Care provides.
Kids Cancer Care also runs a program known as Brain Matters. This program aims to fund pediatric brain cancer research in Alberta. The program is in partnership with the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, which provides funding for research. Brain cancer is one of the most challenging cancers to treat, and this program is vital to provide further research, help develop new treatment options, and improve the chances of survival for children diagnosed with brain cancer.
Lastly, Kids Cancer Care offers a program called Hospital Heroes Program. It is dedicated to easing the burden of hospital stays on families of children with cancer. Hospital Heroes provides items such as tablets, games, toys, and books, that children can use to distract themselves during their hospital stays. The program also offers practical support, such as transportation and meal vouchers, which can help reduce the financial burden of cancer treatment on families.
