Living Lands and Waters Has Removed 11 Million Pounds Of Rubbish From US Rivers

It is estimated that over 8 million tons of plastic flow into our oceans each year, inflicting huge damage on both marine and human life. In this episode, we talked with Chad Pregracke from Living Lands & Waters about the importance of cleaning up America’s rivers by removing man-made waste.
Why Do Rivers Matter?
Living Lands & Waters removes thousands of barrels, tires, appliances and vehicles from America’s rivers each year. Overall, they have extracted over 11 million pounds (5 million kilograms) of rubbish. Chad explains that it’s not just about removing harmful pollutants that flow into the sea; rivers are cherished sites for recreation, sightseeing and fishing - their aesthetic value is priceless.
How Do They Clean Up The Natural Environment?
Living Lands & Waters fill a series of giant barges, each dedicated to one kind of rubbish, such as vehicle tires or scrap metal. They run programs such as Recycle Like A Rockstar, where a volunteer army that now exceeds 118 thousand people helps process and sort all of the rubbish.
Living Lands & Waters also run a program called MillionTrees. By planting native trees and removing invasive plants around the nation's major rivers, they are enhancing the American watershed and improving water and air quality. So far, they have planted well over 1.6 million trees.
