The world’s burgeoning population is demanding more food and producing ever more waste, leaving an indelible mark on the world’s oceans. In this episode we talked with Caitlin Smith from Clearwater Marine Aquarium about the importance of marine conservation and animal rescue.
Protecting Dolphins, Manatees and Sea Turtles
Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida isn’t just a series of habitats and exhibits. It also runs educational programs and a marine rescue hospital. Caitlin explains that the system works a bit like a 911 emergency service; a local team sets out to rescue animals in distress reported by the public. Animals are then triaged, treated, rehabilitated and hopefully released. The whole process is as hands-off as possible to give patients the best chance of surviving independently in the wild.
The aquarium also runs a number of conservation programs. Scientists go out into the field to monitor the health of different species and the status of their ecosystems. Some animals, like bottlenose dolphins, are so-called ‘indicator species’. This means that their behaviour, health and wellbeing are a useful indication of the overall status of their marine biome.
