In this episode we talked with Debbi Edelstein from Native Plant Trust, which is the USA’s first plant conservation organization, built to promote New England's native plants and ensure healthy, biologically diverse landscapes.
What Are Native Plants?
Native plants, Debbi explains, are the plants that were here before humans populated the land. They’re the bedrock of functioning ecosystems, adapted over many years to belong to their specific soil, temperature, slope and elevation.
Why Do Native Plants Matter?
Plants are at the base of the food chain. Everything that lives ultimately depends on plants. When an ecosystem becomes unhealthy and plants die, insects have nowhere to shelter or gain sustenance. This causes their populations to drop. The knock-on effect on other life has the potential to be devastating.
What Is The Native Plant Trust Doing To Protect Plants?
The Native Plant Trust is healing nature as best it can. Its 1500 volunteers monitor rare and endangered plant populations in every county of New England. The Trust’s broad approach is based on three principles: conservation fieldwork, a horticulture program that includes a Botanic Garden and native plant nursery, and a comprehensive adult education program.
