Children are our future. But in Kansas City, impoverished families live below the federal poverty guidelines. These families cannot provide suitable living conditions for children, with 1 in 5 experiencing some trauma or witnessing violence by age 5. That's why in today's episode, we talked with Mary Esselman, President of Operation Breakthrough.
Operation Breakthrough is a non-profit organization that provides educational programs, healthcare, parent programs, and emergency services to children and families across Kansas City. They care for more than 700 children, ages 6 weeks to 18 years, through advocacy, emergency aid, and education.
Caring for the Future of Kansas City
Operation Breakthrough has been caring for the city's youth since 1971. They provide impoverished families and children with the necessary support to live a normal life. The organization organizes these services in the form of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood employs teachers, social workers, and child therapists to provide these essential services.
And they're not stopping there. While Operation Breakthrough currently has six of these neighborhoods, they are actively working to increase the number of neighborhoods and help more impoverished families and children.
