Deep connections can run between a person and their pet. These are very personal relationships that go beyond words. However, some animals can be victims of abuse and neglect, along with their owners. Some flee from harmful situations and need help in rebuilding their lives. In this episode, we talk with Nicole Forsyth from RedRover about providing assistance and relief to both animals and humans alike escaping from situations of domestic violence.
More Than 30 Years of Saving Pets & Owners From Abuse
In national studies, 85% of domestic violence survivors that take refuge in shelters report that their pets were also harmed or abused. 1 in 3 women, or 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence in their lives, meaning that there are millions of owners and pets that have been subjected to physical abuse. Forsyth explains that this is exactly what RedRover works against - they provide temporary shelter to animals displaced by natural disasters or large-scale cruelty and neglect cases, grants to domestic violence shelters to enable them to create pet-friendly spaces so people and their pets can flee abusive situations, as well as providing financial assistance for lifesaving veterinary care. Helping children develop empathy towards animals is the key to preventing cruelty and neglect - and RedRover also provides resources to make this possible.
