In the last few months of the Trump administration, an unprecedented 13 executions were carried out. But are the winds about to change with Joe Biden’s inauguration? Biden is the first US president to openly oppose the death penalty, and there is certainly renewed hope amongst those who have been fighting to abolish capital punishment and reform these extreme penalties. In this episode, we talked with Abraham Bonowitz from Death Penalty Action about their campaign to abolish the death penalty in 2021.
The System is Deeply Flawed
Death Penalty Action is at the forefront of the campaign to end capital punishment, assisting various local, state and national groups by providing tools for action; encouraging people to contact legislators and shine a light on the states that are still executing prisoners. Bonowitz urges that we must all hold Biden accountable for his promise to finally abolish the death penalty, highlighting that 185 people sentenced to death have later been exonerated and freed.
