Several gorilla species are seeing their numbers slowly but surely grow. This is largely the result of years of impressive conservation work. In this episode we talked with Tara Stoinski from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund about the importance of protecting endangered gorilla species in the Congo Basin. 

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is the world’s largest and longest running organization dedicated fully to gorilla conservation. The Fund operates according to four fundamental principles. The first is gorilla protection - the day-to-day activity of monitoring gorilla families to make sure they are safe. The second is engaging with local communities. Tara explains that the Fund uses a people-centered model for conservation; they help communities that live near the gorillas with some of their basic needs relating to livelihood, education and food security. This is important because it reduces the pressure on the gorillas’ forest homes. The third pillar is scientific research: studying and learning from gorillas. The final is educating a new generation of gorilla conservationists.
