In this episode, we talked with Gladis Molina Alt from The Young Center about the importance of getting the best possible outcome for unaccompanied children who go through the US immigration process.
The Young Center protects and advances the rights and best interests of immigrant children that come to the United States from all over the world. Their goal is to change the immigration system so that children are treated first and foremost like children rather than immigrants to be processed and dismissed. A young immigrant deserves both company and representation.
Gladis explains that the Young Center looks at what the domestic welfare system can offer a child detained for their protection, or because there are custodial issues to be sorted out between a parent and the child. Children are provided an attorney to fight for their best interests as part of the Young Center’s Child Advocate Services.
What Are Child Advocate Services?
The advocates assigned to a child make recommendations to the different decision-makers: immigration judges and enforcement agents and the attorneys that work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But they also act as a company for the child - listening to them and guiding them through the process.
