Water for South Sudan Is Building Reliable Water and Sanitation Systems in South Sudan
#452 Great.com Talks With… Water for South Sudan
In July this year, South Sudan will celebrate its tenth birthday. The fledgling African nation is the world’s newest country. Unfortunately, South Sudan is also one of the world’s poorest countries. In this episode we talked with Lynn Malooly from Water for South Sudan about the importance of providing the South Sudanese people with sustainable clean water and sanitation.
Delivering Positive Change In South Sudan
When South Sudan broke away from its northern neighbor, its new government became largely isolated. The country has since struggled with internal conflict, lack of resources and poor infrastructure. As a result, nearly 32% of the population consumes contaminated water from unimproved sources, with waterborne diseases among the top causes of death for children under the age of five. The vast majority of the population do not have access to adequate sanitation services, with only 19% of South Sudanese households able to access improved sanitation services. The rate of sewerage coverage is 0% and there are no wastewater treatment plants in the country. To combat this, Water for South Sudan installs the pumps and other equipment needed to ensure as many South Sudanese people as possible have reliable access to clean water, along with proper sanitation.
Lynn explains that Water for South Sudan benefits from overseeing the whole installation and maintenance procedure. There is no middleman, because the organization’s entire team works on the ground with local administrators. Water pump failure is one of the most common problems clean water charities face, which is why Water for South Sudan supports local sustainable repair efforts. By these life changing, sustainable, locally-led programs, they strengthen individuals, families, communities, and the nation of South Sudan as a whole.
Listen to the whole interview to hear the inspiring story of Salva, the organization’s founder, who, after living years as a refugee and finally making his way to the US, returns to South Sudan to help provide his countrymen with clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education. Water for South Sudan also welcomes donations.
