Wealthy Parents Breed Wealthy Children: Economic Immobility in the US

It surely doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that children from wealthy backgrounds tend to enjoy advantages over those from lower-income families. In fact, recent studies from Stanford University show that approximately half of parental income advantages are passed on to children. These figures are at the high end of previous estimates and suggest that the US is currently very immobile, with only 64% of Americans stating that they believe opportunities for mobility are widely available. In this episode, we spoke with Ben Wilterdink from Archbridge Institute about the current challenges we need to overcome in order to increase equal opportunities.
Bringing Awareness and Breaking Down Barriers of Inequity
The principle of equal opportunity is usually understood to mean that wealth and success depend on hard work and dedication, with the market allowing for competition and mobilization. Wilterdink explains that this is rarely the reality that people from different social backgrounds experience; there is still a lot of work to be done in order to break down barriers and reform public policies.
