A staggering number of Californian families live on or below the breadline. More than four hundred thousand underprivileged kids reside in the Bay Area alone. Families from some of the region’s poorest neighborhoods find themselves isolated, disenfranchised and in a world far from the glitz and glamor California is known for. In this episode we talked with Michael Herald from the Western Center on Law & Poverty about fighting for policies that help lift these groups out of poverty.
An Ambitious Project With Humane Motivations
The Western Center on Law & Poverty promotes wide-reaching policies that affect millions of people at the same time; Michael explains that their ambition is to fix problems at a societal, not individual level and to end poverty in California, which is especially prevalent among people of color.
Many low-income families have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. Many work in hospitality and other vulnerable sectors. That’s why the Western Center on Law & Poverty is looking for creative ways to get money to these people. One new method is giving them extra income through their tax code. The Western Center on Law & Poverty maintains a lobbying presence at California’s state capital to help push these new policies through.
