Humanists believe that religion has no monopoly on the concept of doing or being ‘good’. In this episode, we talked with Sunil Panikkath from the American Humanist Association about the important steps humanists are taking towards social justice and equal treatment for all.
Preventing the Erosion of Equal Rights
The American Humanist Association is an 80-year-old democratic grassroots organization that aims to further humanism in the United States. Sunil explains that religious rights are frequently used as an excuse to discriminate against non-religious people, even in the USA. During the coronavirus pandemic, for example, some places of worship would receive special dispensation allowing them to host unrestricted gatherings, despite public health concerns. These privileges were not afforded to secular meeting places.
Under the Trump administration, the boundary between religion and state was blurred, threatening humanists and raising concerns about inequality. Many humanists fear that the three Supreme Court judges appointed by Trump will undermine America’s fundamental secular model, which the American Humanist Association works hard to protect.
