In this episode we talked with Deepa Nambiar from Asylum Access about challenging wider perceptions of refugees and recognizing the value they offer society.
No Citizenship, Nowhere to Go
Only one percent of the world’s refugees are resettled into a new country. The vast majority remain in a state of limbo, receiving aid but unable to benefit from legal protections that would allow them to work legitimately, gain an education or access healthcare. Asylum Access aims to change that by advocating for refugees’ human rights through policy reform and legal empowerment. Deepa explains that championing organizational leaders and advocates who are refugees themselves is one way to shift the narrative. By ensuring refugees voices are heard, we are less likely to think of them as passive recipients of aid and more likely to acknowledge the array of skills they can contribute - including their ability to lead on how we respond to the crisis itself.
