s the wellbeing of a pet, the pet can improve the wellbeing of its owner. In this episode we talked with Nanci Urban from the Animal Welfare Association of New Jersey about the importance of healthy animal companionship.
Supporting Interspecies Friendships
AWA runs an array of programs aimed at owners, volunteers and kids. Several of them are designed to help struggling owners keep hold of their pets. These include a pet retention program for people in financial difficulty, as well as a low-cost clinic and a Pet Food Pantry.
Nanci emphasizes the role of the organization’s educational programs. She explains that a huge part of successful pet ownership involves having realistic expectations, doing research and learning how to communicate with your pet. AWA also believes in saving as many animals as possible, no matter what their situation might be. They are a “no kill” adoption center, having saved an incredible 97 percent of their animals in 2020 through dedicated medical and neonatal care.
