Against Malaria Foundation’s Fight Against Malaria

The iGaming Industry is Helping Fight Against Malaria!

Malaria is a severe and potentially deadly parasitic disease transmitted through mosquito bites. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there were 241 million malaria cases in 2020 with 627,000 deaths — roughly 80% of fatalities were children under 5-years-old.

Malaria affects African countries the most, accounting for 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of deaths.

Fortunately, malaria is preventable through specific techniques, tools, and treatment. One of the best ways to prevent malaria is to avoid mosquito bites through long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) or bed nets (mosquito nets).

About Against Malaria Foundation

Against Malaria Foundation’s (AMF) mission is to prevent malaria by funding the distribution of these LLIN mosquito nets to communities most susceptible to this disease. To date, AMF has a presence in 36 countries, with most of its efforts focused on developing populations in sub-Saharan Africa.

AMF’s website says it’s raised $462,259,820 which has funded 224,228,426 nets and protected 403,611,167 people from malaria. This backs out to approximately $2.06 per net and $1.15 per person protected.

GiveWell, a nonprofit dedicated to vetting and researching charities, estimates that it takes AMF approximately $4,500 to save a single life through bed net distribution.

Are LLIN Mosquito Nets Really Effective?

Yes, there are several studies showing the effectiveness of insecticide-treated mosquito nets. The CDC estimates that treated nets can reduce malaria death in children under 5-years-old by 20%.

Bed nets serve as barriers between the people sleeping under them and mosquitos which may carry malaria or other diseases. When these nets are treated with insecticides (chemicals that are low-risk to humans, but toxic to insects), they are even more effective. Regular insecticide nets should be retreated every 6-12 months.

AMF distributes long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) which are the most effective type of mosquito net. They can maintain effective levels of insecticide for at least 3 years.

In addition to increasing the distribution of LLINs to prevent malaria, the CDC says that finding ways to extend the life of bed nets could also have significant impact. It estimates that if they could grow the net’s lifespan from 3 to 5 years, that would be equivalent to $3.8 billion over 10 years.

Great.com and Against Malaria Foundation

Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) is consistently one of the highest-rated charities by independent research groups and organizations.

GiveWell is a nonprofit dedicated to studying and publishing analyses of causes around the world with the goal of finding high-impact giving opportunities. GiveWell has spent thousands of hours researching and analyzing charities and their financials to determine which causes have the best return on donation (ROD). Since 2009, AMF has been one of GiveWell’s top-rated and cost-effective charities.

Giving What We Can (GWWC) and The Life You Can Save (TLYCS) are two other organizations that also rank AMF highly because of their transparency, leadership, operations, and impact.

Our mission at Great.com is to do the most good, and we believe strongly that every dollar donated to AMF will do more good than almost any other cause we could work with. While we will also donate to other charities and organizations, AMF is a high-impact, cost-effective cause which we will continue to support through our iGaming for Future initiative.

iGaming for Future | Uniting the Gambling Industry to Do Good

Great.com is partnering with gambling organizations, gambling affiliates, online casinos, and other iGaming brands to give back and do good. While the gambling industry is often thought of in a negative light, we believe that there are a lot of opportunities (and money) in this industry that can be redistributed to positive, high-impact causes such as AMF.

As part of the iGaming for Future initiative, we will be donating to these causes and spreading the word about these charities and the good they are doing in the world. Our hope is that we can make more people aware of these charities while also directly funding their efforts.
