The Skeletons of Atlantic City – Revel Casino Hotel

Share this:
Unfinished construction

If you want to know all there is to know about New Jersey Casinos, take a look into Atlantic City’s past. Check out this Abandoned video about the Revel Casino Hotel.

Atlantic City has had many ups and downs over its time as a gambling destination on the East Coast, and in this time, it has seen many newly constructed casinos succeed and fail. But the case of the Revel Casino Hotel is such an interesting one because of its start as one of the most ambitious casino resorts built in AC’s history, its poor timing, and its developers’ odd choices for what to do with unfinished construction.

Check out the Abandoned series video on the Revel Casino Hotel to see every step of its ill-fated development.

It started out as a bit of a mystery when JP Morgan Stanley bought a plot of land near Showboat Atlantic City in 2006. They then revealed that they’d planned to build two massive hotel towers, each rising to 700 feet, which would have made them the tallest in the state. The whole resort would have 4,000+ rooms and allow parking for 7,000 vehicles. But as the costs of everything they wanted started to add up quickly, things scaled down quite a bit.

But then the detrimental real estate crisis and recession hit in 2008, and Atlantic City was reeling from losing jobs and homes. Construction continued and then-governor Chris Christie used state funds to back the rest of the Revel’s development, meaning construction on the second tower, which was a fifth of the way done, was canceled and “naturally” worked into the structure of the building.

After blowing past the $2 billion budget by $4 million, the casino finally opened in 2012. But what made it fail and become abandoned (time and time again)? Watch the video above to find out! And stick around to see the completely unfinished rooms and spaces that exist between active and open public spaces.
